hey there...my mom found this article and new I would enjoy it, so I am letting you in on it as well...
What causes thunder and lightning?
Clouds may look soft to you, but they're actually full of tiny water drops and ice bits. when wind blows, the cloud particles bump into each other and make electricity, like the shock you feel after you drag your feet on a carpet and touch someone. But since clouds are huge, instead of a little spark, they sometimes make big sparks called lightning.
Because lightning is very hot, it heats the air around it, which expands. then the air cools very fast and ruses back in from both sides. The sound of air hitting air is thunder. The closer the lightning is, the sooner you'll hear the thunder.
As soon as you see lightning or hear thunder, go inside a building or a car to stay safe, and never stand under a tree-lightning is attracted to tall objects. -Megan Norris
